News 19 Teacher of the Week: Helena Osmer

After just 2 years in the classroom, Mrs. Osmer is making a huge impact in the lives of her students in the classroom and on the tennis court.

SALUDA COUNTY, S.C. — The school year may be coming to a close but the work is far from over for the students in Helena Osmer's honors English class at Saluda High School. Her 9th and 10th grade students are working on group projects that tasks them with developing arguments on topics that range from ghosts to standardized testing.

Mrs.Osmer was born and educated in Batesburg-Leesville. She says being this close to home is a huge benefit in knowing the community and what's important to the students. She also says that being relatively close in age helps her with classroom management. She laughs at the idea that her students try to get away with things, but she's tried all of the same tricks not too long ago. Osmer says that her favorite teacher was Kimberly Baxter and she models her teaching style after her former ELA teacher and the impact she had on her students.

Osmer is not only making an impact on her students in the classroom, she's also the girls tennis coach at Saluda High School. She says there's no limit to how hard she will work to make sure her students succeed and for each of them success looks different. According to Osmer, "Learning is a process. There's no perfect end or destination for everybody."
