NEWBERRY, S.C. — If you're not paying close attention, you might walk past Stacie Coleman's 6th grade math class at Newberry Middle School and think the students are just playing games.
But with the move of every game piece during today's lesson the students are getting closer to the correct answers.
Coleman has been an educator for six years at Newberry Middle school, but she says sometimes her students become the teacher.
She gives the example of when her students able to explain the material to their classmates, it's proof they understand what they've been taught and at times it helps their classmates in a different way.
Coleman describes herself as a "late bloomer" when it comes to her career in education. She worked ten years in tire manufacturing before going back to college to become an educator in the same school district she attended as a student.
Newberry Middle School principal Zeb Reid describes Coleman as an educator who is dedicated to her students in and out of the classroom.
Reid says he's seen firsthand how hard Coleman works to establish relationships with her students so that they know she cares about more than just their grade. Her students say she deserves this recognition because she does everything to make sure they understand the work and often offers them the opportunity to increase their grades through extra credit.
If you know an educator like Ms. Coleman who deserves to be recognized for their hard work in the classroom you can nominate that teacher by sending us an email to TOW@WLTX.COM.
