Could a woman soon sit on the South Carolina Supreme Court?

The hearing is scheduled for May 9 and three women and three men, including a man and woman from Columbia, are on the list.

The upcoming public hearing for the Judicial Merit Selection Committee is scheduled for Thursday May 9, 2024 and three women are on the list. 

Currently no women are on the South Carolina Supreme Court.

The selection committee is meeting at 9am to talk about the qualifications of the candidates for Seat 3 on the South Carolina Supreme Court. 

The candidates include: 

  • The Honorable Ralph K. Anderson, III Columbia 
  • The Honorable Blake A. Hewitt, Conway
  • The Honorable Deadra L. Jefferson, Charleston 
  • The Honorable R. Keith Kelly, Spartanburg
  • The Honorable Jocelyn Newman, Columbia
  • The Honorable Letitia H. Verdin, Greenville

If you want to speak at the public hearing you need to submit written notarized statements of proposed testimony, this is in accordance with the Procedural Rules of the Judicial Merit Selection Committee.  Statements must be received by noon Thursday April 25, 2024.
