COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina U.S. Senator Tim Scott has been picked to be the next chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Scott's fellow GOP senators elected Scott to the role Wednesday. In the position, he's expected to lead the party's efforts going into the 2026 midterm elections with the goal of expanding their majority in the chamber.
During last week's election, Republicans won the Senate after six years of Democratic control, and now hold at 53 to 47 advantage. As part of that new majority, Scott will also become the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.
"I am honored and humbled by the confidence placed in me to protect and grow our Republican majority," said Senator Tim Scott. "With President Trump in the White House and Republican leadership in Congress, help is on the way for the American people. Donald J. Trump proved that when we fight everywhere with the TRUTH, we win. That is why we must secure a Republican Senate for all four years of the Trump administration, and that work starts today!"
Scott has been a close ally of President Trump since his first term. However, in 2023 he briefly ran for the Republican nomination for President when it was still unclear if Trump would be on the ticket. However, he withdrew last November when it became clear he wasn't gaining traction with GOP supporters, who still preferred Trump to those who'd entered the primary race, including Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.
Scott then went back to full support for Trump. At one point, media reports suggested he might be a possible vice-presidential pick for Trump before he ultimately chose Ohio Senator J.D. Vance.
