Fort Jackson trainee dies after being taken to hospital on Monday. Here's what the Army has released

The trainee's death is still under investigation, Post officials said.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A trainee at Fort Jackson has died after becoming unresponsive on Monday.

According to a statement from the fort, 39-year-old Pfc. Veronica L. Wynn, a basic combat trainee with the 3rd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, became unresponsive "during structured and disciplined pickup in the company area."

The statement said personnel attempted life-saving measures before the trainee was taken to an area hospital, where she died. Officials said Wynn is from Hurtsboro, Alabama.

Wynn was undergoing reception into the training company at the start of basic training - before training had begun, officials said.

“Today is an especially sad day for Team Jackson after the loss of one of our newest Soldiers,” said Fort Jackson's commander, Maj. Gen. Jason E. Kelly, in a statement.

Kelly extended condolences to Wynn's family and friends.

"We are providing comfort and assistance to her family and fellow trainees," Kelly added.

Authorities haven't released the trainee's cause of death but said an investigation is underway.
