Trees damaged throughout Batesburg-Leesville following overnight storms

According to Dominion Energy, there were around 230 customers without power from 12:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Tuesday.

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, S.C. — Batesburg-Leesville residents are picking up after a second severe weather event within the past five days.

First, it was heavy rain and flooding last week, and now it's high winds and rain from last night.

"We just pray to mother nature right now, doesn't send any more rain or high winds our way for a few days," Teddy Luckadoo, town manager said.

Limbs, water and lots of utility trucks. That's the scene in Batesburg-Leesville Tuesday following a nasty storm.

According to Dominion Energy, there were around 230 customers without power from 12:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Tuesday.

"We have met yesterday with a representative from the state emergency division as well as Lexington County's emergency manager to just try and understand how can we reach out for resource help for anyone who sustained damages through this," Luckadoo said.

For Keith Getz and his family, the damage was a very close call.

"My wife and four children were here and they heard a loud crash and then my wife found out that the tree had fallen," Getz said.

It was a near miss with a 30-some-foot tree crashing down right next to their screened in porch.

"Other things can be fixed, or replaced but just glad family's okay. It could've been a lot worse," Getz said.

For Lexington School District 3, they're still trying to clear water out of the Batesburg-Leesville High School fine arts center from last Thursday.

They sent News 19 photos, and a statement saying in part quote, "The Fine Arts Center sustained water damage due to the extremely high volume of rain that Batesburg-Leesville received in a very short time period. The water appears to have come into the Fine Arts Center through a doorway, causing damage to a dressing room, the orchestra pit, some furniture and a few carpeted areas. Lexington Three officials are already working with the district's insurance company to get repairs handled in a timely fashion."

Getz tells News 19 he hopes to have the tree moved out of his yard by the end of this week.
