Two more inmates overdose at Richland County jail, deputies say

The overdoses are the latest in a series of overdoses at the jail.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Two inmates at Richland County's Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center overdosed on illegal substances on Saturday, according to Richland County deputies.

On Saturday, August 17, 2024, around 6:00 pm, deputies say they responded to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center at the request of jail officials. Upon arrival, deputies were informed that two inmates were taken to the medical bay for suspected drug overdose.

Deputies were also informed that one of the inmates was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. The other inmate recovered in the medical bay, according to deputies.

Deputies say they searched the location in which the inmates were found and discovered multiple unknown substances.

Both inmates have recovered from the overdose, according to deputies. 

Pending further investigation, neither of the inmates have been charged with a crime.

The overdoses are the latest in a series of overdoses at the jail.
