COLUMBIA, S.C. — When you come across an unknown, war-like relic it's best to pass it along to law enforcement. That's exactly what one Horry County resident did this Thursday!
Turns out the unknown item was a 1899 French artillery shell, and it was unexploded, according to the Horry County Police Department bomb squad and U.S. Airforce Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.
The unexploded ordnance needed to be detonated, which meant it had to be relocated. The department taped off its headquarters on Main Street until that was possible.
It was around 8 p.m. that same night when the shell was successfully detonated at a safe location near Conway. Police say the detonation may have been heard, or even felt, around the area.
