Body of missing kayaker recovered from Lake Carolina, officials said

Authorities responded to the Richland County lakeside community around 3 p.m. when a kayaker went underwater and didn't resurface.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — UPDATE: Coroner identifies kayaker recovered from Lake Carolina on Thursday

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. -- State officials confirm the body of a missing kayaker has been recovered. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) said that the body was removed from Lake Carolina by members of the Columbia-Richland Fire Department on Thursday afternoon.

The SCDNR said it responded to a portion of Lake Carolina after a kayaker overturned and didn't resurface. The Columbia-Richland Fire Department also responded around 3 p.m. Department officials confirmed just before 5 p.m. that fire crews had officially turned the incident over to state DNR investigators.

SCDNR officials offered their condolences to the victim's family and deferred further questions to the Richland County Coroner's Office, which arrived on the scene later in the afternoon.
