WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — On Monday night, West Columbia City Council looked to the future of their community and what can be made better in the upcoming year.
City staff from several departments like Public Works, as well as Sewer and Water, gave a presentation about what each department is working to improve in 2024.
From beautification to sewer improvements, and a major focus on pedestrian safety, overall it seems the City of West Columbia is hoping to add more walkable and pedestrian-focused projects in 2024.
"A grant-funded project coming in 2024, which will add high-visibility crosswalks, with improved ADA accessibility in the area of State, Meeting, and Sunset Boulevard coming into Meeting Street. This project will help all persons traverse the bustling river district," said Tara Greenwood, Assistant Administrator of Development in West Columbia.
By creating several new crosswalks along the Riverwalk District the city hopes to give people safer access to tourist attractions, as well as shopping and dining in the area. Other projects through The Avenues and Mill Village include adding street lights and stop signs for traffic calming.
The council also took a step toward approving $300,000 for the U.S. Highway 1 Safety Improvement Project with the Department of Transportation for mast arms at intersections and crosswalks.
These new crosswalks and mast arms will go along Dreher Road and near the Walmart on Highway One also known as Augusta Road.
The next full council meeting where the funding for mast arms and crosswalks will be discussed again is on January 9.
