COLUMBIA, S.C. — The BullStreet District is growing in downtown Columbia.
On Tuesday, developers announced that REI Co-op, an outdoor retailer, will build a new location in the BullStreet District by Spring of 2020. The store is expected to create 45 new jobs.
The 181-acre BullStreet District, which has been developed over the past five years, includes town homes, office space and restaurants. There's current construction for a 196-unit retirement community.
However, original plans have changed over the years. A 10-screen movie theater was expected to be built back in 2017, but Cobb Theaters pulled out of the deal after not meeting a parking requirement deadline.
Chandler Cox, project manager for Hughes Development Corporation says she's still optimistic about the 20-year build.
"We've been really happy with the progress that we've made," says Cox. "We've had a lot of things accomplished in a short period of time. Segra Park was the 2016 ball park of the year, we've done the largest private office building in Columbia since 2009, we've got 196 unit senior living unit under construction, there's town homes, there's four historic renovations, our first restaurant- so we've got a lot of momentum."
