Two children injured after fire at apartments off Garners Ferry Road in Columbia

Officials with the Columbia-Richland Fire Department say crews responded around 6:40 Wednesday evening.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia Firefighters say two children were injured in a fire heavily at an apartment complex in southeast Columbia Wednesday night.

Firefighters were dispatched around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday to Whispering Pines Apartments at 400 Greenlawn Drive in Southeast Columbia just off Garners Ferry Road.

When firefighters arrived, they say they found heavy fire and smoke coming from one of the buildings. They add that several people had to be rescued. Two children were taken to the hospital.

Chief Aubrey Jenkins says his team is still investigating the fire.

"Right now we are actually investigating this fire to figure out how this fire started, at this point, we're not sure, we do know they were there alone, so we're just trying to put all the pieces together," Jenkins explained.

Images from the scene show damage to one building on the second floor with heavy burn marks to the ceiling.
