WINNSBORO, S.C. — An incident report is revealing new details about a shooting in Winnsboro that left two juvenile wounded.
The shooting took place last Friday night across the street from Fairfield Central High School, which had just hosted a homecoming football game. The Winnsboro Department of Public Safety said over the weekend they believed the shooting may have originated from an apartment complex where two groups exchanged gunfire following an ongoing dispute.
The parking lot where the victims were found is on the Highway 321 bypass and is the location of the former Walmart store.
The incident report said Fairfield County Sheriff's Office deputies were working the football game where they heard gunshots coming from near the Bojangles restaurant, which is in that same parking lot.
One victim, a 12-year-old boy, was found in the parking lot of the Bojangles. He was taken to MUSC Fairfield and then ultimately to a Columbia hospital for treatment. A second victim, a 16-year-old female, was found at the emergency room. Officers said that shooting took place in front of the old Walmart where the girl suffered an injury near her mouth. She was also taken to Columbia for treatment.
Winnsboro officers said they recovered multiple shell casings.
A caller reported to police that they had seen three juveniles carrying handguns and yelling at people near a building in the area. One person was taken into custody on a weapons charge at the Deerwood Apartments, which border the parking lot where the injuries took place, but it's unclear if that person was related to the shooting.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Winnsboro Department of Public Safety or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Callers who choose Crimestoppers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward.
