Fatal shooting in Columbia ruled justified, no charges filed

Investigators determined that the woman had an active order of protection against the man.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A fatal weekend shooting in Columbia has been determined to be justified, according to law enforcement.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott issued a statement Monday saying that there would be no charges in a shooting which took place at 4:20 p.m. Sunday on Wynn Way. That's near the St. Andrews area.

Officers said they went to a home there and found a man with a gunshot wound to the torso. The man died at died at the scene. A woman who was there was initially detained in connection with the death.

Investigators, however, determined that the woman had an active order of protection against the man due to a history of domestic violence. Officers say on the day of the shooting, the man followed the woman to her house and began swinging at her in an attempt o hit her. 

Officers believe she acted in self-defense when she fired a gun at the man.
