Man, woman killed in Cayce motorcycle crash identified

The accident happened a little after 7 p.m. in the 2800 block of Charleston highway.

CAYCE, S.C. — Two people are dead after a car accident in Cayce.

Sgt. Antley with the Cayce Deptartment of Public safety said they received a call about 7:24 p.m about a car-motorcycle collision in the 2800 block of Charleston highway and Dixiana road  front of the Racetrack gas station. 

The driver and passengers on the motorcycle, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. According to the coroner, Melvin Clyde Horton, Jr., 54, of Cayce, and Heidi Joy Goots, 55, were riding the motorcycle when they were struck by a vehicle turning left. They were not wearing helmets. 

According to Captain Kelley Hughes, Horton was a former South Carolina state trooper. He worked as a trooper from August 1989 to June 2005.  

The driver of the car was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The accident remains under investigation.
