COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The Dorn Veterans Administration Medical Center in Columbia is holding a special ceremony to honor its 800 volunteers.
Director Timothy McMurry says Thursday's event is being held to recognize the men and women who have donated selflessly of their time to assist the military veterans at the center.
McMurry says they have acted as drivers, organizers, comforters and counselors during their 76,000 hours of service and have had a huge impact on the facility.
VA officials say anyone in the community may join the volunteer force and no medical experience is necessary. People are encouraged to find opportunities to serve by visiting Dorn on Garner's Ferry Road or getting further information at www.volunteer.va.gov .
