Snackers beware: You may see spot shortages of Ding Dongs, Zingers or other sugary Hostess Brands treats due to a recall.
Hostess is recalling 710,000 cases of some of its best-known snack cakes and doughnuts because the flour used to make them may contain peanut residue that isn't noted on the packaging.
That could cause sometimes serious reactions for people with peanut allergies, which has happened in two instances so far, the company says. The recall was ordered "out an abundance of caution."
The recall may catch the attention of the snacks' biggest fans, especially if they find empty supermarket shelves.
"While some products may be temporarily out of stock, Hostess products remain widely available throughout the country, given that this voluntary recall only impacts select lots of certain products," Hostess spokeswoman Hannah Arnold tells USA TODAY.
The recall is the result of a recall by a supplier, Grain Craft, because of "low levels of undeclared peanut residue," Hostess said in its statement.
Products under recall include certain lots of Ding Dongs, Zingers, Chocodiles and certain doughnuts.
