WIMBLEDON, England — At this point, are there any Serena Williams tennis matches that don't make history?
Sunday the world No. 1 cruised by German Annika Beck 6-3, 6-0 in the third round of Wimbledon in just 51 minutes, giving her a 300th career win at a Grand Slam.
Williams passes Chris Evert at 299, and is now just six major victories behind Martina Navratilova, the all-time record holder.
“Oh gosh really?” A bewildered Williams said when a BBC commentator told her of the stat. “I had no idea.”
Williams is now 82-10 at Wimbledon as she aims to defend her title here and tie Steffi Graf for a different record: Most Grand Slam titles in the Open era, at 22.
She is 755-123 overall in her career, and Monday will take on a familiar foe in veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam winner.
Williams holds a 9-3 edge over Kuznetsova, though the Russian, who is 31, beat her in Miami earlier this year.
Williams is 300-42 all time at majors, Evert having gone 299-37 and Navratilova 306-49. Serena will not be able to meet or pass Navaratilova's record until the U.S. Open.
Middle Sunday is being played on at Wimbledon for the first time since 2004. Williams played then, as well, winning a third round match over Magui Serna. Williams lost to Maria Sharapova in the final that year.
Navratilova and Graf still outpace Williams in Wimbledon match wins, however, Serena’s total of 82 is far behind Navratilova’s 120 and trails Evert’s 96.
