CinemaCon: New Spider-Man movie to be called 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'

LAS VEGAS — The 2017 Spider-Man reboot now has a title, Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The new webslinger Tom Holland announced the title while sharing the stage with Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Picture Entertainment's Motion Pictures Group, Tuesday night at CinemaCon, the convention for theater owners.

Rothman explains that Spider-Man: Homecoming (in theaters July 7, 2017) has a double meaning for the young superhero (student Peter Parker by day) and for the film studio, back in the comic-book movie business.

"Homecoming obviously is a high school reference. This movie shows the enduring conflicts at Peter Parker’s roots, saving the world and getting your algebra homework done on time," said Rothman.

"More than that, for Sony, the film is a homecoming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe," he said. "It's something we and all the fans are giddy about."

Before the solo outing, Holland and Spider-Man will appear in Captain America: Civil War (opening May 6). Holland even walked the red carpet at the Civil War premiere Tuesday in Los Angeles and flew in by private jet for Sony's CinemaCon presentation.

Holland showed off a clip from Civil War featuring Parker being approached by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) after Stark stopped by his Aunt May’s (Marisa Tomei) house.

Rothman clearly expects the homecoming will lead to a lasting franchise. When Holland pointed out that Parker was trying to "find his true identity and where he belongs in the world," Rothman butted in with a joke.

"I hope he finds it," said Rothman, laughing. "And I hope it takes about three movies."
