WASHINGTON — The company that makes Planters peanuts and other assorted nuts is recalling a pair of products in five states because it may be contaminated with listeria.
Hormel Foods Sales, LLC issued the voluntary recall for products packaged at one of its facilities and sold at Publix and Dollar Tree locations across five states.
The nuts were sold in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The nuts may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes listeria infections, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Hormel Foods said the recall was limited to the 4 oz. packages of Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts and 8.75 oz. cans of Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts.
Affected peanuts will have a UPC code on the side of the can or bag reading 2900002097 with a "best if used by" date of 04 11 25.
The mixed nuts included in the recall have a UPC code of 2900001621 and a "best if used by" date of 05APR26.
Listeria is an infection that can sometimes be fatal, especially in young children, elderly people or those with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The FDA did not say how the nuts may have been contaminated with listeria, and there have been no reports of illness tied to the recall.
Anybody who has purchased a case of nuts included in the recall should avoid eating them, and return the package — even if opened — to the store they bought it from for a refund or exchange.
