COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Atlantic hurricane season began today and now there is an area in the tropics that is being watched.

A broad area of low pressure in the southern Bay of Campeche is producing showers and storms.

The system is expected to move across the bay towards the east coast of Mexico.

If the system stays over water, a tropical depression could form before it moves onto land. The hurricane center gives the area of low pressure a 60% of further development over the next five days.

Even if the storm does not develop more, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of southern and southeastern Mexico.

We have already had one named storm this season. Andrea briefly formed in May. The next named storm this season will be Barry.

Hurricane season continues through November 30.
