Police issue murder warrant for woman in Church's Chicken shooting

Memphis Police said Monica Williams was wanted for first-degree murder for the shooting July 11, 2024, that killed Anitra West.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police said the woman accused of shooting and killing a Church's Chicken employee in Orange Mound is in custody.

MPD announced Monday, July 15, 2024, that 45-year-old Monica Williams was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder.

The Memphis Police Department responded to the shooting July 8, just after 9 p.m. at 2963 Park Avenue, where officers found a woman, identified by the Shelby County D.A.'s office as Anitra West, seriously hurt. West was taken to Regional One Health where she later died. 

Investigators said West was working at Church's Chicken when another woman with purple hair drove through the drive-thru in a teal-colored compact SUV and argued with West. 

Police said the woman then drove away, and West walked outside the building for some air. A few moments later, the sound of a gunshot went off, and video showed the teal-colored SUV speeding off the parking lot, investigators said. West was found outside the building.

Investigators said the vehicle was found in the 2600 block of Deadrick just after 7 a.m. on July 9. A warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Williams Thursday, July 11.
