Plane crashes in Colorado field, 2 injured; investigation underway

A Tecnam P2006T went down in the area of Spruce Mountain Road and Sky View Lane in Douglas County.

LARKSPUR, Colo. — Two people were injured when a plane crashed in Larkspur Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration said two people were onboard a twin-engine Tecnam P2006T when it crashed in a field just east of Interstate 25 in the area of Spruce Mountain Road and Sky View Lane. The crash happened around 7:45 a.m.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the plane's occupants were out of the plane when first responders arrived. They were carried out on backboards through waist-deep water and taken to a hospital, the sheriff's office said. The pilot has serious injuries and the passenger had minor injuries, according to a preliminary FAA report.

Deputies said it appears the plane hit a highway sign before crashing into the field.

An preliminary FAA report says that the plane crashed "under unknown circumstances."

9NEWS Aviation Analyst Greg Feith said investigators will determine why the pilot was flying low enough to clip a road sign.

"Was the pilot trying to make an emergency landing and just incidentally hit the sign, or were they actually doing something they weren't supposed to be, flying over the highway and struck that sign?," Feith said.

A Colorado Department of Transportation camera in the area showed emergency vehicles and fire trucks blocking the three right lanes of northbound traffic.

The FAA said they and the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the crash, with the NTSB leading the investigation.

According to maps of the area, there's an airstrip just west of the interstate around the area where the crash occurred.
