Man shot, killed by homeowner who thought man was breaking into his car, police say

The homeowner told officers he was getting ready for work when he noticed a person and some lights by his car.

SAN ANTONIO — A homeowner on the west side of town shot and killed a man he suspected was trying to break into his car, police say.

San Antonio Police responded to the 8200 block of Micron Drive near Culebra Road around 3:50 a.m. on Tuesday morning for reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived at the home, they found a man dead from a gunshot wound.

The homeowner told officers he was getting ready for work when he noticed a person and some lights by his car.

According to police, the homeowner shot several times, hitting the man who died at the scene.

Jerry Bernal who lives in the neighboring complex explains property crime is happening more frequently in their area.

"We had lots of vehicles broken into," he said. "Sometimes the cars get off left on blocks or take their wheels or whatever, but that's just about mostly thefts. I guess it was bound to happen. I mean, there's been so many break ins."

Police say the homeowner will not face charges at this time.

This is a developing story.
