FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) - The general in charge of the Army's largest training installation says his post is on track to train an additional 2,000 soldiers next year.
Maj. Gen. Pete Johnson says Fort Jackson is adding an eleventh training battalion, allowing the total number of soldiers trained annually to grow from 46,000 to 48,000.
The 53-year-old general took command at Fort Jackson in June.
Johnson told reporters Monday the long-term plans to add the new battalion gives military instructors more time with each soldier. He said it's similar to deciding how many students should be in a classroom for any single teacher.
Fort Jackson trains 61 percent of all the service's female soldiers, and more than half of all male soldiers.
The fort is located outside Columbia.
