Name of chaplain candidate who died at Fort Jackson released

Pascal Buma, 38, a member of the Oklahoma National Guard, collapsed during the morning physical training ability group run.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — We now know the identity of the Chaplain candidate who died during a morning run at Fort Jackson on Monday.

Chaplain Candidate (2Lt.) Pascal Buma, 38, was a Chaplain Basic Officer Leader Course student at the Institute for Religious Leadership (USA-IRL) at Fort Jackson and a member of the Oklahoma National Guard 

Officials say Buma collapsed during the morning physical training ability group run on Monday. Instructors and students provided immediate aid until Fort Jackson EMS arrived, according to officials.

Buma was taken to MUSC Health where he was later pronounced dead.

“It is with great sorrow that we mourn the loss of one of our own, ”USA-IRL Commandant, Chaplain (COL) Louis DelTufo said. “We ask for your prayers for the Family, fellow students and our staff here at the Institute.”

USA-IRL officials say they are providing support to the family and teammates of Buma.
