PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. — Earth Day marked the opening of a new tower that will give visitors a better view of the highest point in South Carolina.
The Sassafras Mountain Tower is now open to the public in Pickens County. The location is 3,553 feet above sea level.
The $1.1 million observation tower sits on the South Carolina/North Carolina border and gives visitors a view that can stretch 30-50 miles on clear days. The platform features a compass rose design that shows how the state line runs through the structure.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says in the past the view from the summit was limited due to the number of trees in the area. The tower aims to dramatically improve the view for visitors.
Sassafras Mountain is located about 20 miles north of Pickens. A paved road travels to the top and a ramp and trail have been added to allow people of all abilities to access the tower.
