Eastover, SC (WLTX) - For the last several weeks, there's been a growing concern over the fate of a historic site in Richland County.
Dozens of concerned residents came to a public meeting to voice their opinion of why Kensington Mansion should be repaired by its owner and re-opened to the public.
International Paper owns the property and has assured residents that they are still committed to keeping the home open.
They will make the necessary repairs, but it will take 12-18 months.
Back in the 1980's, the company spent nearly one million dollars to renovate the building and it was open for tours to learn about the historic site.
The house has been closed since February of last year after sustaining damage during the ice storm.
Richland county Councilman Kelvin Washington says this concern could have been avoided if communication was better between the owners and the community.
"Clarity with their commitment and true legal commitment but also their commitment to the community, to make sure that not just to save the mansion but the slave cabin dwelling as well," said Washington.
As for the caretakers of the antiques...the company says they will be placed in storage for a year until the repairs are complete.
