Orangeburg school districts ready to merge into one

Orangeburg school districts 3, 4 and 5 are less than three months away from becoming one.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Orangeburg school districts 3, 4 and 5 are less than three months away from becoming one.

To prepare for the consolidation, there were a host of goals that needed to be achieved, such as electing a new consolidated school board by November, hiring a interim superintendent in the beginning of the 2019, and hiring most departmental chiefs by end of March.

The district has approved two new key new administrative positions that need to be filled: Director of Finance and Director of Support Services.

"We need a director of finance," says Dr. Zona Jefferson, the interim superintendent for the new consolidated district. "We have to have somebody to make sure that we receive all the money that we should because if you don’t go up there and claim the money for the services you provide it then you won’t get it. So we have to make sure we have somebody in place that makes sure we get the money and then making sure it’s spent on children."

And there's the director of support services.

"There are a lot of opportunities out there to support our children," Jefferson says. "There’s a lot out there that just can’t be done at school level you need someone at the district level to make sure all the opportunities for our children are secured."

So what about the other jobs?

Jefferson didn't give an exact number of how many positions will stay or leave the districts, but these two positions added will most likely take the number of administrator positions from 90 to 71.

In terms of contracted roles like teachers and administrators, those new contracts will go out May 1st and other non contracted roles will be handled at a later date.

The consolidation officially begins on July 1st.
