Some Richland County residents say there was confusion about where to vote

The Richland county election commission says there were some changes.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Hundreds across the South Carolina Midlands cast their ballots in municipal elections on Tuesday.

Blythewood voters had three races to vote for, including mayor.

In addition to candidates, Blythewood residents had a referendum to vote yes or no on whether the town council should change from 'at-large voting districts' to 'single-member districts.'

"Well if you don't vote you allow others to decide for you," one voter said out of the Blythewood Park precinct.

The other race to watch was in Richland County, where two seats were open: District 3 and Council member-at-large.

In the process, there was some confusion for voters about exactly where to vote.

"So I came to vote, and they told me my street was actually Ward Nine, and the last time I voted, they sent me down here," said Kassie Heller, a voter at Martin Luther King (MLK) Park.

At MLK Park in Columbia, Heller went to where he thought was his usual place to vote.

"But apparently they sent something in the mail and I just didn't know it," he said.

Richland County Election Commission director Travis Alexander said Heller isn't the only one who experienced this issue.

"Some of it could be temporary locations and we have had voters that had temporary locations, COVID there was a lot of temporary locations due too some facilities not being able to used, but the city of Columbia actually did get out some postcards to their voters that were affected by that," Alexander said.

Aside from confusion about where to cast a ballot, some voters say the day went smoothly.

"It was smooth very respectful and officers they were doing the best," another voter at Blythewood Park said.
