Former President Donald Trump won South Carolina on Tuesday, earning its nine electoral votes for the third straight election. South Carolina has not voted for the Democratic nominee for president since 1976, when Democrat Jimmy Carter -- the governor of the neighboring state of Georgia -- defeated Republican President Gerald Ford throughout the South.
Four years ago, Trump won 55% of the vote, matching his performance from 2016. Given the success Republicans have in the state, presidential candidates rarely spend time campaigning there. The Associated Press declared Trump the winner at 8:01 p.m. EST.
The state was not considered a battleground, as the state typically votes Republican in all statewide races. Neither candidate has stopped in the state since the primary season, and that was when Harris wasn't at the top of the ballot. While Republicans are aiming to maintain their longstanding grip, Democrats are hopeful to make inroads, especially with shifting demographics and intensified focus on key state issues.

Trump's won the state the last two election cycles. Most recently in 2020, then-incumbent President Donald Trump defeated then-Democratic challenger Joe Biden with 55% of the vote compared to Biden’s 43%, securing the state’s nine electoral votes. In 2016, Trump won South Carolina against Democrat Hillary Clinton, carrying 54.9% of the vote to Clinton's 40.7%. This margin, though narrower than in some other Southern states, underscored the Republican hold on South Carolina even amid national debates on populism, trade, and immigration that heavily influenced that election.
Democrats haven't won the state since Jimmy Carter's victory in 1976. Over the past 48 years, GOP candidates have consistently won the state, having no Democrat get elected governor since 1998. That was also the last time a Democrat won a U.S. Senate seat.
