Here's a glimpse of Rosalynn Carter's first memorial service, repose

A motorcade traveled to Atlanta and Mrs. Carter lied in repose at The Carter Center Monday evening.

ATLANTA — On Monday, the first of several observances took place to honor the life of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

A motorcade traveled to Atlanta, where Mrs. Carter lied in repose at the Carter Center Monday evening.

The motorcade procession on Monday began at 10:25 a.m. Here are some of the highlights:

10:25 a.m.: The Carter family motorcade arrived at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia. Mrs. Carter’s remains were transferred to a hearse, accompanied by past and present members of her U.S. Secret Service detail.

Motorcade departs hospital 

  • 10:40 a.m.: The motorcade departed the grounds of the medical center on a public route to Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia. The public was then invited to pay respects along the motorcade route.

Wreath-laying

  • 11 a.m.: The motorcade arrived at the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex at Georgia Southwestern State University, where wreaths were laid in her honor.

Motorcade departs for The Carter Center 

  • 11:15 a.m.: The motorcade departed for The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta.
  • 3:15 p.m.: There was a private arrival ceremony at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta.
  • 3:30 p.m.: There was a private repose service in the lobby of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum for library, museum and Carter Center staff.

Repose service 

  • 6-10 p.m.: The Carter family invited members of the public to pay their respects as Mrs. Carter lied in repose at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum. Parking and a shuttle were available at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church -- located at 435 Peachtree St. NE.

The Carter Center adds the following information:

Shuttle bus passengers will be dropped off on northbound Freedom Parkway close to the museum. This is also where visitors who arrive on foot will enter.

Visitors are subject to search upon entry into the Carter Presidential Center. Prohibited items must be surrendered and will not be returned. Backpacks, bags, purses, clutches, and camera bags are prohibited on the bus. Diaper bags are allowed and will be searched by hand. The following items are prohibited: aerosols; ammunition; animals other than service animals; bicycles; balloons; coolers; drones and other unmanned aircraft systems; explosives; firearms; glass; thermal or metal containers; laser pointers; Mace or pepper spray; packages; selfie sticks; toy guns; weapons of any kind; any other items determined to be potential safety hazards.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Carter requested that donations be made to the Carter Center Mental Health Program or the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers. In Atlanta, those who wish to give flowers may lay them in front of the large granite-and-steel sign at the main entrance to the Carter Presidential Center. In Plains, flowers may be left near the Jimmy Carter Monument downtown.

Condolence books will be available to sign at GSW, the Plains Welcome Center, Plains High School and in Atlanta at the Carter Presidential Center.
