South Carolina lawmakers reflect on third anniversary of Jan. 6 riot

About 15 South Carolinians are in the federal database for arrests in connection to the riot.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina lawmakers looked back on the Jan. 6 riot on Saturday, a day when, three years earlier, thousands of people stormed the United States Capitol. About 15 South Carolinians are in the federal database for arrests in connection to the riot.

Republican Senator Joshua Kimbrell said it put a wedge in the country.

"It's been a very contentious three years; I feel like the country is unfortunately very divided," Kimbrell said.

Democratic Rep. Todd Rutherford said the country hasn't moved far enough.

"To watch the insurrection and know that we have prosecuted about a thousand people; that's not enough," he said.

Since Jan. 6, 1,230 people have been charged with federal crimes, and nearly 730 have pleaded guilty to charges.

Some lawmakers like Rep. Rutherford are looking for further action against former president Donald Trump. Trump has not been charged for a potential direct role in the day's events.

"To know that the president that was in office that seeming called for it on that day has not been prosecuted for it is not enough," Rutherford said.

While Rutherford calls for more action, Kimbrell said three years is enough.

"You know, the fact that we're talking about today, here on the news, proves that it's still being used by politicians all across the spectrum to drive their point, and I think, frankly, moving past it is the best thing for the country, ultimately," Kimbrell said.

Rutherford said it's an event that shouldn't be forgotten.

"More importantly, we've got to make sure that that attitude doesn't exist and permeate to simply move on," he said.

Fifteen South Carolinians have been logged as arrested on the United States Attorney's Office website.
