COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina US Congressman Jeff Duncan is the latest Republican to join in on plans to object the Electoral College's certification of the 2020 presidential election.
Rep. Duncan announced on social media that he formally plants to object to certification in the House of Representatives on Jan. 6. Duncan represents the Third Congressional District.
"I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United State as a Member of Congress, and with that oath comes the vital role of ensuring the legality and integrity of our free and fair election system," he wrote. "The 2020 election saw unprecedented institutional issues like state changing their voting systems in violation of their state constitutions, unelected bureaucrats changing election law instead of lawmakers themselves, poll watchers prohibited from doing their jobs, failure to properly scrutinize the validity of mail-in voting, and the list goes on. We need to shed a light on the issues that took place during the 2020 election to preserve our electoral system for generations to come. Our mission is simple: Count every legal vote, through out every illegal vote, and investigate every irregularity and allegation. All Americans should be on board with this mission."
Duncan joins Sen, Josh Hawley of Missouri in challenging the Electoral College's certification of Joe Biden's victory for president with a final count of 306 electoral voted for Biden, 232 for Donald Trump.
Biden also won the popular vote with 81,283,485 (51.4%) over Trump's 74,223,744 (46.9%).
In a CBS story on Hawley's decision to object, Sen. Lindsey Graham, a close associate of President Trump, is quoted as saying challenging the votes would "probably do more harm than good."
