Problems Force Some Voters to Use Paper Ballots in Richland County

Election officials say flash card problem with voting machines is now fixed.

Richland County, SC (WLTX) - — Richland County election officials say problems with a flash card in voting machines led them to use paper ballots for some voters this morning.

Republicans in Senate District 20 are taking part in a primary runoff election.

Richland County Election Director Rokey Suleman says poll workers began noticing a problem with some flash cards in the machines around 6:15 a.m. this morning as they began preparing to open the locations. Around 6:30 a.m., elections officials began reprogramming the cards. Paper ballots were given to some voters while they worked to get the cards fixed.

Suleman tells News19 all machines were back up by 9 a.m., and that the problem impacted 11 of the 39 precincts in the county.

The Senate District 20 GOP runoff is between Benjamin Dunn and John Holler. The winner will face Democrat Dick Harpootlian in the November election.
