COLUMBIA, S.C. — Vice President Kamala Harris delivered the keynote address Monday at the NAACP South Carolina State Conference's annual "King Day at the Dome" event, saying that she believes fundamental freedoms are at risk.
The theme for this year's gathering of the event was "Ballots for Freedom, Ballots for Justice, and Ballots for Change."
"It’s good to be back," remarked Vice President Harris as she addressed the audience.
In her address, Vice President Harris touched on the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., drawing parallels between his fight for justice and the challenges faced today. She urged voters to actively participate in the democratic process by heading to the polls.
“Fundamental freedoms are under assault. Freedom from fear, violence, and harm. Freedom to vote, to live, to learn, to control one’s own body,” said Harris.
The "King Day at the Dome" event has become a pivotal stop for candidates eyeing victory in the state's primary. Notably, this year's Democratic primary is scheduled for February 3, with President Joe Biden facing challenges from Marianne Williamson and U.S. Representative Dean Phillips.
Vice President Harris encouraged resilience, stating, "Let us not throw up our hands because it’s time to roll up our sleeves. We were born for times like this."
The event, originating more than two decades ago as a protest against the Confederate flag flying above the State House, has gained significance over the years.
During her speech, Vice-President Harris subtly criticized former Governor and presidential candidate Nikki Haley for her recent refusal to acknowledge slavery as the cause of the Civil War, stating, "For example, the Civil War, which must I really have to say, was about slavery," prompting cheers from the audience.
Amidst the backdrop of the event, dozens of Palestinian protesters were present, calling for a ceasefire.
In her concluding remarks, Vice President Harris invoked the words of Dr. King’s wife, Coretta Scott King.
“With hope and optimism, we will fight. And when we fight, we win," said Harris.
President Joe Biden is set to return to South Carolina in two weeks, where he will headline the State Democratic Party’s celebratory dinner ahead of the presidential primary.
