Debby strengthens in Gulf, Florida and Carolinas prepare for effects

Tropical storm watches and warnings have been issued for portions of the western Florida coast.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Tropical Storm Debby became the fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season on Saturday afternoon, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center

The tropical storm became more organized once it entered the Gulf of Mexico after passing over Cuba on Friday night and early Saturday. As the system moves through the Gulf of Mexico, it is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall along the Big Bend region of Florida by early Monday.

This storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall along southeast coastal areas, possibly leading to flash flooding in Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas over the weekend. Residents in these areas should stay informed and closely monitor this weather system's progress.

After landfall in Florida, Debby is forecast to travel along the southeastern coast and stall over the Carolinas.

Potential South Carolina Impacts:

There is a lot of uncertainty for South Carolina and the Midlands, especially regarding Tropical Storm Debby. This system's path, speed, and strength will play a crucial role in shaping our weather early next week.

Heavy rainfall, flooding, and gusty winds will likely impact South Carolina's coastal areas. If Tropical Storm Debby continues on its projected path, the Midlands are more likely to receive heavy rain, with 5 to 10 inches of rainfall possible by the latter part of next week.
