COLUMBIA, S.C. — Deputies are warning residents against sex-for-money websites. Not only are they illegal, they could be dangerous.
Several armed robbery incidents are currently under investigation in Beaufort County, and deputies say many are linked to skipthegames.com — a prostitution website.
Over the past few months, five men reportedly met up with women advertised on the site after offering to pay money for sex. Some of those meetings took place in "makeshift brothels."
After the initial meeting, victims say the women would make up an excuse to leave the room, such as getting "more comfortable." That's when one or two armed men when would arrive, stealing the men's wallet, cash and cellphones. None of the men were injured during robberies.
The sheriff's office is now asking any other victims to contact with them at 843-524-2777. They are also offering this advice:
"Not only is it ill-advised to engage in sex for money because it is illegal, it increases the risk of becoming a victim of violent and other types of crimes. The Sheriff's Office strongly urges Beaufort County residents and guests to avoid sex for money websites," the office said.
