Florida governor signs bill into law that will designate Florida A1A as Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway

The memorial highway will run through Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Flagler, St. Johns, Duval and Nassau counties.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Gov. DeSantis signed a bill into law on Thursday that will designate Florida State Road A1A, which runs through beaches along the state's Atlantic coast, as Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.

The bill passed unanimously through both chambers of the Florida Legislature.

The memorial highway will run through various portions of Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Flagler, St. Johns, Duval and Nassau counties, as the Florida Department of Transportation will build suitable markers designating the highway by August 30.

Buffett, who died of a rare type of skin cancer at 76 years old last year, has an album named after the state road.

Music critics were never very kind to Buffett or his catalogue, including the sandy beach-side snack bar songs like “Fins,” “Come Monday” and “Cheeseburgers in Paradise.” But his legions of fans, called “Parrotheads,” regularly turned up for his concerts while wearing toy parrots, cheeseburgers, sharks and flamingos on their heads, leis around their necks and loud Hawaiian shirts.
