Explosion expected near Highway 90 after ordnance disposal in Horry County

Residents near Highway 90 in Horry County heard a loud noise as authorities safely disposed of an unexploded ordnance on Thursday.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. — Residents in a portion of Horry County may have heard an explosion similar to a bomb going off on Thursday afternoon. And that may not be far from the truth.

The Horry County Police Department announced on Thursday afternoon that its bomb squad, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the United States Air Force were preparing to make an unexploded ordnance safe near Highway 90.

The department said residents may hear a loud noise but assured the public that "all is well."

The agency didn't elaborate on the ordnance or specifically where and how they found it.
