Augusta club shooting leaves 2 wounded in crossfire, suspect shot by deputies

The shooting happened around 1:13 a.m. Saturday. Deputies said they heard gunfire coming out of a club in downtown Augusta.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Two people were hurt after gunfire went off at a club in Augusta, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at a press conference on Saturday.

Deputies said the investigation has now been taken over by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

It happened around 1:13 a.m. Deputies said gunfire was heard coming out of the Sole restaurant in the 1000 block of Broad Street, that's downtown Augusta. When they got over to the area, deputies said two men could be seen shooting at each other across an area of two to three blocks, with a large group of people nearby on the sidewalk.

That's when deputies said they fired back, hitting one of the suspects, who had an assault rifle. He was taken to the hospital but is now in custody and has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Two other people were shot in the crossfire between the suspects in the club, deputies said.

The GBI said it's unclear why the fight started.

Agents recovered multiple weapons from the crime scene and found seven cars hit by gunfire. Several businesses in the area also were damaged by the many gunshots fired during the incident.

Richmond deputies are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward. They are asked to contact the GBI.
