COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The first woman to head the Army's Drill Sergeant School at Fort Jackson is suing the government, contending she was the target of racial and sexual discrimination.
U.S. attorneys for the federal government have responded to the suit filed in Columbia, asking the court to dismiss the case. They say the government is immune from such a suit arising from actions related to military service.
Now-retired Command Sgt. Maj. Teresa King says in her suit that three of her former Army co-workers undermined her authority and targeted her for removal from her job because she was black and female.
King's attorney, James Smith of Columbia, says she is pressing ahead with the suit because the Army did not deal with her complaints through normal administrative channels.
