Elgin, SC (WLTX) -- Main Street in downtown Elgin has reopened after a natural gas leak shut it down Tuesday morning.
Lugoff Fire Chief Dennis Ray said a tractor trailer hit the gas line, then left the scene.
Crews had to close the road after the break caused a significant amount of gas to be released into the air. At least five businesses and four homes had to be evacuated.
A detour route was set up to Chestnut Rd, Smyrna Rd, then Sessions Rd. while crews worked to secure the problem.
Around 10 a.m., Ray said the line had been secured and the air had improved enough to allow them to reopen the road.
SCE&G was called to repair the damage to the line.
