The man singing the theme for the new James Bond movie Spectre? Smith, Sam Smith.
The Grammy-winning British crooner confirmed on Twitter Tuesday morning that his tune Writing's on the Wall will be the latest in a long line of cinematic tracks in 007's history, going back to Shirley Bassey's iconic Goldfinger in 1964. The song will be available to purchase and stream Sept. 25.
"This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song," Smith tweeted. "I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations."
Smith co-wrote the new song with Jimmy Napes, and it's the first time a British male solo artist has recorded the Bond theme since Tom Jones' Thunderball in 1965.
"Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for Spectre and with Sam's extraordinary vocal performance, Writing's On The Wall will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time," said producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli in a statement.
Smith not-so-subtly hinted on social media Monday that he was getting the job, tweeting a closeup picture of a ring with the octopus-like sigil of the nefarious organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E.
He joins the likes of Paul McCartney, Madonna, Carly Simon and Duran Duran in the annals of folks who've done Bond songs over the years. More recently Chris Cornell, the duo of Jack White and Alicia Keys, and Adele have been tapped for the honor — the latter's theme for 2012's Skyfall won a Grammy, Golden Globe and Oscar.
Spectre, directed by Sam Mendes and again featuring Daniel Craig as the English superspy, hits theaters Nov. 6.
