HENDERSON, N.C. — The Vance County Sheriff's Office said it's continuing to investigate the death of 21-year-old Javion Magee, a Black male truck driver from Illinois whose body was found at the root of a tree with a rope wrapped around his neck. Magee's death has been a topic of conversation across the country since it was reported on Sept. 11.
The North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner's Office said, upon autopsy, it has determined no physical or sexual assault wounds were visible on his body. They suspect no foul play.
Officials created a timeline of events from Magee's commercial vehicle's GPS, witness statements, the 911 call, and cell phone records.
The chronological order events the sheriff's office released is as follows:
Sept. 10, approximately 1 a.m.: Magee leaves Hazelton, P.A. after picking up items to deliver to a Walmart Distribution Center in Henderson, N.C. He begins to drive toward Virginia.
Sept. 10, 6:50 a.m.: The truck stops at a truck stop 12 miles north of Ashland, V.A. for one hour.
Sept. 10, 7:50 a.m..: Magee leaves in the commercial truck and heads back onto Highway 1 South.
Sept. 10, 8:50 a.m.: Truck continues on I-86 South in Petersburg, V.A. heading south into North Carolina.
Sept. 10, 10:04 a.m.: The truck enters Vance County and stops at a Chex Truck Stop in Middleburg, N.C.. According to video surveillance footage, Magee walked into the stop alone, used the restroom, and got food from the store's grill. He walked back to his truck alone. The truck then heads to Henderson, N.C..
Sept. 10, 12:37 p.m.: Truck arrives at Walmart Distribution Center in Henderson. The items are unloaded.
Sept 10, 4:53 p.m.: The truck leaves the distribution center and within minutes is seen idling in a dirt parking area in front of 285 Vanco Mill Rd. in Henderson, N.C.. The area is less than a mile away from the distribution center.
Sept. 10, 5:44 p.m.: The truck drives for a few minutes and later stops at a parking lot at the corner of West Andrews Avenue and Vance Street at 5:53 p.m.. Magee leaves the truck and walks to a smoke shop at 422 East Andrews Ave. Surveillance footage shows him buying a product at the store alone. Magee then leaves the area in the truck at 6:01 p.m..
Sept. 10, 6:11 p.m.: The truck heads toward the Walmart Supercenter on N. Cooper Drive in Henderson, N.C.. Magee is then seen on video from five cameras buying a blue Ozark Trail rope at self-checkout and leaving the store with the rope in hand. He was wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts, white socks and Crocs shoes.
He leaves the Walmart at 6:22 p.m..
Officials from the Vance County Sheriff's Office said through investigation of the surveillance footage at the Walmart Supercenter, they saw Magee stop, leave his truck, and give something to a homeless person sitting at the store's entrance.
When investigators interviewed the homeless person after identifying him, he said Magee gave him $228. He then got back in the truck and left the parking lot.
Sept. 10. 6:28 p.m.: Magee pulls into a Hampton Inn Hotel on Ruin Creek Road. Hotel surveillance footage shows him walking from the back of the hotel wearing a black backpack as he walked into the hotel alone. He spoke to the hotel clerk and left the hotel at 6:34 p.m..
Sept. 10, 6:35 p.m.: The truck is turned on and leaves the hotel parking lot.
Sept. 10, 6:52 p.m.: The truck pulls back onto a dirt lot at 285 Vanco Mill Rd. and the ignition is turned off. Surveillance footage shows Magee leaving the driver's side of the truck and walking away from the vehicle alone towards the wood line on the east side of the dirt lot, carrying something in his hand.
Magee is seen walking back up around a trailer and to the gate of T&R Tractor and Truck Repair, then walks back to the wood line of the lot.
Sept. 10, 7 p.m.: Magee gets back into the truck and turns the ignition on, according to surveillance footage. Law enforcement said they he didn't see anything in his hand when he got back in the truck, according to the video.
Sept. 10, 7:28 p.m.: The truck is idling.
Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m.: The ignition is turned off and never turned on again. Deputies said they saw on video Magee walking from the truck towards the trees by himself. The video doesn't show him walking back to the truck after this, according to officials.
Sept. 11, 10 a.m.: Vance County 911 gets a call from the owner of T&R Truck Repair reporting a man with a rope around his neck on a fence at 285 Vanco Mill Rd.. The caller said the man wasn't breathing and "appeared to have died by suicide."
Law enforcement said they then began to investigate and saw the rope around the victim's neck was tied 11 times and the other end of the rope was around a tree branch. "The rope was tight," according to officials. The body was in a seated position with his legs out. He was wearing a white t-shirt, black shorts, white socks, and Crocs shoes.
Officials said they didn't find any identification on him, but a cardboard wrapper from the rope was found lying next to him. From the rope, detectives identified the victim as Magee after going to Walmart and identifying the purchaser.
A T&R Tractor & Truck Repair employee told investigators the company Magee's truck belonged to call the store and asked that they check on the driver because the truck hadn't moved, according to law enforcement. Investigators said they then unlocked the truck and found a wallet belonging to Javion Magee of Aurora, IL.
Officials said they also found a phone and a receipt for the rope in the truck.
Law enforcement said that based on this information, they called the Aurora Illinois Police Department. Police then contacted Magee's father and told him Magee had died.
KLLM trucking said this was Javion's first time delivering to Henderson, according to law enforcement. This was also apparently Magee's first trucking job since getting his commercial driver's license earlier this year.
Sept. 13: The North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner's Office autopsies Magee's body. There they determined he didn't have any defensive wounds and no signs of physical or sexual assault. Magee's neck also didn't have any hemorrhaging around the soft tissue of his neck. A toxicology report is pending.
The Vance County Sheriff's Office said they've submitted search warrants to gain access to Magee's phone.
