Columbia, SC (WLTX)- There is no question that Pine Grove elementary 4th graders have a teacher that they respect and love. Colavoto Mckie runs his class like a corporation and he calls it the high achieving go getters.
McKie tells us why he takes his job seriously.
"We take our job serious as learners and as a community of learners because everybody had role and everybody has a mission in here and the mission is to try to get somewhere in life and to try to be somebody in life so if we go in with that same philosophy in our head every day, then there is no way we can regress to what we didn't know."
Yvette Gordon and her daughter Sidney nominated Mr. McKie for our teacher of the week.
"He as 20 students and he teaches each child where they are."
As part of the corporation each student like Sidney has the job to learn and to be their best.
"He increased my reading level and get good grades on social studies, Science Math and ELA."
But its not only what takes place in the classroom that makes Mr. McKie our Teacher of the week. He does what he expects his students to do and that is take it above and beyond. During the flood, he called to check on each student and give them homework but he doesn't stop there.
One parent says its what he does outside the classroom that also causes him to stand out.
"My daughter was sick a couple of days and he called and said tell my baby I love her and she's going to be okay. And that reassures a parent, especially a single parent as I am that someone else cares about your child besides you. and that's always a great thing for us."
Mr. McKie expects a lot, and his students rise to his expectations.
"If they leave me knowing something they need to know and they know that they can get out there and get what they want in life. I'm alright, I've done my job."
