COLUMBIA, S.C. — The former police chief of the Columbia Police Department will remain behind bars after he was denied bond in federal court Thursday.
Randy Scott appeared at the federal courthouse in downtown Columbia Thursday morning. Wearing an orange jumpsuit, Scott briefly answered the judge's questions, but said nothing else. Jury selection is set for October 7, with his trial to start October 8.
Scott was arrested back in May on these most recent charges. According to the federal indictment, Scott was unlawfully in possession of fire arms and ammunition. Authorities previously said Scott failed to return agency issued weapons.
Scott must also go before a judge after his probation officer says he failed drug tests. Back on July 11, his probation officer filed paperwork in U.S. District Court asking the court to issue a warrant for Scott's arrest after she said he failed numerous court-ordered drug tests and failed to submit to drug testing.
The petition cites Scott testing positive for methamphetamines in urine samples on May 20, May 22, and July 2.
Scott also failed to submit to drug testing on June 4, June 13, June 27, and July 3; and failed to attend substance abuse treatment and counseling multiple times over the past few weeks.
Scott was the Chief of Police for the City of Columbia in 2011-2013. He resigned the position in 2013, citing post-traumatic stress disorder developed after an officer's line-of-duty death during his time with the Richland County Sheriff's Department.
In May 2013, Scott returned to the Richland County Sheriff's Department, where he had worked before becoming Columbia's police chief in 2010. Scott left the sheriff's department in July of 2016 due to medical problems, according to officials.
