NEW YORK — Eggs sold at Costco stores in states across the Southeast, including South Carolina, have been recalled due to concerns of possible Salmonella contamination.
The Food and Drug Administration announced that New York-based Handsome Brook Farms had voluntarily recalled 10,800 retail units of Organic Pasture Raised 24-count eggs sold under the Kirkland Signature brand due to potential Salmonella contamination.
Beginning on Nov. 22, the eggs were distributed to 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. They have a UPC code of 9661910680 and were packaged in plastic cartons with the Kirkland Signature label on the top. The eggs also have a "Julian code" of 327 and a "Use By" date of Jan. 5, 2025, which are printed on the side of the carton.
The FDA notice said the eggs were recalled after the company found that eggs that weren't "intended for retail distribution were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging."
The notice said additional supply chain controls and retraining are being implemented to prevent a similar incident from happening in the future. The FDA notice from Nov. 27 said no illnesses had been reported due to the eggs.
However, anyone with eggs included in the recall should stop eating them and return them to their local Costco store for a refund. Otherwise, people with these recalled eggs should dispose of them.
If buyers have additional questions about the recall, they can contact Handsome Brook Farms at 646-733-4532, ext. 1, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Questions can also be directed to recall@hbfeggs.com.
