Man left without wheelchair ramp at home after car crashed into yard

"I don’t think that the sound of the impact will ever leave us" says Claudia Russ

A Forest Acres home is picking up the pieces after someone crashed into their front yard, damaging their car and a wheelchair ramp.

Claudia Russ was in her home at 8 p.m. on Monday when a car crashed into her front yard.

"I don’t think that the sound of the impact will ever leave us" Russ said.

A 2017 Nissan ran into the home's lightpost, Russ' vehicle, and a wheelchair ramp. Russ’s friend Richard also lives at the home, and needs to use a wheelchair.

Shortly after the incident, the driver and passenger fled the scene.

"You know, Richard is now not only confined to his wheelchair but now we have no way to get him out of the house" said Russ, "That worries me about something happening and needing to get him out of the house and I can’t and we’ve lost our whole source of freedom by losing a vehicle that we probably won’t be able to replace."

Russ says she was on her way to take out the trash to the front yard when something told her to stay in the kitchen and finish cooking her dinner. A feeling she’s forever grateful for.

"Listening to the inner voice that we’re all graced with we just don’t know sometimes when to listen" says Russ. "Having been that I listened made the outcome of this a lot better."

It's still unclear as to who the individuals were and why the vehicle crashed.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
