CHARLESTON, S.C. — He spent 14 seasons as the head coach at Newberry College, becoming the all-time winningest coach there with 414 victories.
But Russell Triplett will now see if he can make the transition from D2 and the South Atlantic Conference to D1 and the Southern Conference.
The former Brookland-Cayce and Clemson shortstop was introduced Monday as the new head baseball coach at The Citadel.
The Charleston-based military school went outside the Citadel family for this hire. Triplett takes over for Citadel alum Tony Skole who was in charge of the program for seven seasons. He was let go after the Bulldogs finished 21-32, 3-18 in the So-Con this past season.
While he did not attend the Citadel, Triplett says he has a keen understanding of the values of the school and he says he wants his team to emulate those same principles.
